Understand that everyone experiences travel differently.

As someone who has spent a lifetime traveling the world—professionally as a former international flight attendant and personally—I’ve seen it all. From the breathtaking beauty of far-off lands to the challenges of navigating new environments, travel has been my greatest passion and teacher. Over the years, I’ve shared countless travel tips, but there are five pieces of advice that I always come back to when helping others plan their journeys.  But before diving in, it’s important to acknowledge that everyone experiences travel differently. What works for me may not be exactly what works for you. The best advice I can offer is to embrace travel in your way, whether that means seeking luxury or adventure, solitude or connection. Your journey is unique, which makes travel so incredibly enriching.  Whether you’re a first-time explorer or a seasoned globetrotter, these tips will help you travel smarter, more confidently, and with an open heart.

Plan, But Leave Room for Spontaneity

Planning is essential, but the unexpected is one of the greatest joys of travel. While it’s vital to research your destination, book accommodations, and create an itinerary, don’t be afraid to leave some room for spontaneity. Some of the best travel memories happen when you take an unplanned detour or discover something unexpected.  I advise setting a loose framework for your trip but being open to changes. If you stumble upon a hidden gem, a local market, or a recommendation from a fellow traveler, don’t hesitate to adjust your plans. Remember, how you travel is up to you, so follow your instincts!

Embrace Cultural Differences

Travel is about experiencing new cultures, and with that comes a need for respect and understanding. The world is incredibly diverse, and part of the beauty of travel is learning how different people live, communicate, and interact with their surroundings. Embrace those differences with an open mind and a willingness to learn.  My advice is to take the time to learn a few phrases in the local language, observe local customs, and be patient when things don’t go exactly as expected. You’ll find that people are more welcoming when they see you are trying to understand their way of life. Every culture will uniquely enrich you if you open yourself up to it.

Travel Light, But Smart

One of the biggest mistakes many travelers make is overpacking. It’s easy to think you’ll need multiple outfits or extras “just in case,” but packing light will make your travel experience much easier. Not lugging around heavy bags will save time, money, and energy.  I advise sticking to the essentials and packing versatile clothing you can mix and match. Ensure you carry an organized, accessible day bag for important items like your passport, wallet, phone, and snacks. Trust me, you’ll feel freer when you’re not weighed down by unnecessary luggage. Your travel style may be minimalistic or extravagant—just be mindful of your needs and the way you like to move.

Safety First

While travel is about excitement and discovery, safety should always be a priority. From keeping your belongings secure to understanding the local emergency numbers, being cautious ensures that your trip stays enjoyable. It’s easy to let your guard down in beautiful new surroundings, but preparation is key to avoiding common travel pitfalls.  My advice is to research the safety guidelines for your destination and always trust your instincts. Keep copies of essential documents in physical and digital forms, such as your passport, and stay aware of your surroundings. Whether you’re a cautious traveler or a risk-taker, make safety part of your travel habits.

Be Kind and Patient

By its very nature, travel comes with its frustrations—delayed flights, language barriers, and unexpected hiccups are all part of the journey. But I’ve learned that approaching these moments with kindness and patience can change everything. How you react to those around you, especially local service workers and fellow travelers will shape your experience.  My advice is to practice kindness and patience with everyone you encounter on your travels. Gate agents, flight attendants, taxi drivers, hotel staff—they’re all working hard to make your trip smoother. A little kindness goes a long way and often comes back to you through better service or unexpected help.

So, whether you’re taking your first flight or checking off your 50th country, these five pieces of advice will help you navigate the world more confidently and joyfully. Remembering that what feels right for one person may not work for another is important. And that’s okay! The beauty of travel lies in how we make each journey our own, embracing new experiences at our own pace.  When you set off on your next adventure, take these tips and listen to your instincts. Embrace travel in the way that feels most true to you—whether that means planning every detail or going with the flow. The world is vast, and your experience of it is unique. Make the most of every moment, learn from every interaction, and, most importantly, enjoy the ride.
