How to choose the best travel suitcase and why?

When traveling, choosing the right suitcase for your trip can be essential. It can make your journey more comfortable and hassle-free especially going through airports. Traveling can be exciting, but it can also be stressful, especially when it comes to packing, baggage fees, and airports. On my recent trip, I found it challenging to pack for over five weeks while traveling to five different countries in one suitcase and a carry-on. In this blog post, I’d like to explain how to choose the best suitcase for travel and why it may be your best option.

Hard-Shell Suitcase
A hard-shell suitcase is an excellent option if you plan to travel by air. These suitcases are made of durable materials such as polycarbonate or ABS, which can withstand rough handling during transportation. Additionally, they provide excellent protection for your belongings, especially if you’re carrying fragile items such as electronics or souvenirs. Hard-shell suitcases come in various sizes and designs, so you can choose one that suits your travel needs. My personal choice is the
Rimowa, it is durable and lightweight, and I especially like its locks for security. Because of the multidirectional wheels, I can easily maneuver through the airport with a suitcase in each hand. While Rimowa is on the higher end price-wise, they have a great warranty program, and throughout the years, I have had my luggage repaired and/or replaced at no charge.

Soft-Sided Luggage
Soft-sided luggage is a popular option for travelers who prefer flexibility and portability. While these are not my choice, this type of luggage is lightweight and can be easily compressed to fit into tight spaces. They will easily fit into car trunks, unlike hard shell luggage that you need to ensure are not compressed and cracked by the trunk closure mechanisms. They’re also perfect for weekend trips or short business trips where you need to pack light. Soft-sided luggage comes in various materials, such as nylon, polyester, and leather, and they’re available in multiple sizes and designs.

Backpacks and Duffle bags.
Backpacks and duffle bags are great versatile options for travelers planning to do a lot of walking or hiking during their trip. They’re comfortable to carry, distribute the weight evenly, and leave your hands free. They come in different sizes and designs; some have features such as padded straps, multiple compartments, and hydration systems. You can choose from various backpacks, such as daypacks, hiking, and travel backpacks. Backpacks are an excellent choice for European travel. With the cobbled streets, narrow and uphill locations, they are a much better option than rolling luggage. In addition, they can fit into tight spaces such as overhead compartments or under the seat.

Carry-On Luggage
A carry-on suitcase or backpack is an excellent option if you want to avoid the hassle of checking in your luggage and waiting for it at the baggage claim. Depending on the size, these compact bags can usually fit in overhead compartments or under the seat, making them perfect for short trips or weekend getaways. They come in different materials, such as hard-shell, soft-sided, and hybrid, and are available in various sizes and designs.

Choosing the right suitcase for your trip can significantly impact your travel experience. Whether you’re traveling by air, going on a hiking trip, or taking a weekend getaway, there’s a luggage option that suits your needs. Consider the type of trip you’re taking, the length of your journey, and the activities you’ll be doing, and choose a luggage option that meets those needs. With the right suitcase, you can travel more hassle-free in comfort and style.
