Flight Hacks from a Former International Flight Attendant: How to Fly Like a Pro!

Ready to take your flying game to the next level? As a former international flight attendant, I’ve seen it all—the good, the bad, and the easily avoidable. Here are my best flight hacks to keep you comfortable, hydrated, and ready for any challenge at 35,000 feet. Trust me, these tips will make your next flight smoother than ever!

Pack a Warm Layer—You’ll Thank Yourself Later

Airplane cabins tend to be cold in flight, and temperatures can vary throughout the plane, especially near exit rows, where it tends to be cooler. Unfortunately, blankets aren't provided in many main cabin flights—especially on low-cost airlines—and there’s no way to ensure everyone will feel comfortable with the same temperature. That’s why layering is essential. Even if you’re flying to a tropical destination, planes tend to get cold after takeoff. Packing a cozy jacket or sweater will keep you from freezing in that chilly cabin air and ensure you’re comfortable throughout the journey. It's better to be prepared than shivering through the flight!

Pack Your Snacks—Be Ready for Anything

Let’s be honest: in-flight meals are a gamble, and meals—especially dietary requests—are often not guaranteed. What if your preferred option is already gone or doesn’t meet your dietary needs? No worries! Always pack light snacks—fruit, nuts, or a sandwich—to satisfy yourself. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping those mid-flight hunger pangs away, especially on longer flights with limited meal service. Being prepared with your snacks means you won’t have to rely on the in-flight menu for a satisfying bite.

Hydration is Key—Bring or Buy Your Water Source

Staying hydrated while flying is essential! Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, and dehydration can sneak up on you fast, especially on long flights. To avoid this, always come prepared with your water source. Save a few dollars to grab a bottle of water once you’re inside the secured area of the airport, or better yet, bring an empty reusable water bottle and fill it up at a water station. Don’t stash it away in the overhead bin—keep it with you throughout the flight. And here’s a pro tip: the flight crew will happily refill it for you at no extra cost!  It’s a simple way to keep hydrated, refreshed, and feeling your best from takeoff to landing. Keeping yourself hydrated makes a difference, especially when dealing with jet lag and dry cabin air.

Let the Crew Know About Any Medical Conditions

One of the critical aspects of a flight attendant's job is to keep you safe. If you have allergies, diabetes, or other medical conditions, it’s crucial to inform the flight attendants. Giving them a heads-up allows them to check in on you more often and ensure you’re comfortable throughout the flight. At EbonyTravelers, we believe in advocating for our needs—your health and well-being come first, and the crew is there to ensure you enjoy a safe and pleasant journey. Don’t hesitate to communicate with the flight attendants so they can assist you as best they can.
